Week 1 Bulletin

Hello all,

Welcome all new members – and, welcome back to all those who are returning.

On Sunday 16th (this coming Sunday) at 4.00pm we will be having our first meeting of the term at Darwin College bar. This is probably unfamiliar territory to most of you, but Darwin is on Silver Street, just past Queen’s (http://g.co/maps/az585). To get to the bar: walk in through the main porter’s lodge entrance, and turn right down the corridor, walk until you see a big flight of stairs, don’t go up them, but instead turn right into the bar. Everyone is welcome to come along whether you want to stay for 10 minutes and just have a chat or whether you’d like to discuss the future direction of the society and what kind of events you’d like to see. If you can’t make it, please feel free to email us with anything that you’d like to discuss.

In other news, we now have a website which some of you may have already seen or found us through. If you have any problems with it, or can think of any ways of improving it, it’d be great to hear from you. The website can be found at: cambridgefeministsociety.wordpress.com

For those of you who are new, every week we send out a bulletin informing you of events happening in or around Cambridge which might be of interest to you. This week there’s an opportunity to help out with some really interesting research into Reclaim the Night, a book launch and a talk, which we have tentatively included, entitled ‘Has Feminism Been Counter-Productive?’. If you’re on this mailing list, there is a strong chance you won’t agree with the content of this talk – so, go along and make yourself heard.

Also, it’s not for a while yet, but we thought we’d mention Feminista 2011 (http://ukfeminista.org.uk/2011/08/fem-11-announced/). Feminista has a range of great speakers this year including Sandi Toksvig and Shami Chakrabarti. It will be taking place on Saturday 12th November in London and, if you’d like to go, you need to prebook tickets which you can do using the link above.

Lastly, we’d like to draw your attention to the current ‘Clare’s Law’ petition which would allow women to check if their partner had a history of domestic violence. You can find out more about it here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/government-bid-to-expose-violent-partners-2315247.html and http://www.womensaid.org.uk/page.asp?section=00010001001500080007&sectionTitle=Respect+and+Protect . And you can sign the petition via Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Fabulous?sk=app_164305453639228 .

Best wishes,

Arianne, Filip, Fleur and Matt

Welcome

Welcome to the new Cambridge Feminist Society website. This space will be used to keep you up-to-date with society events, as well as other feminist-related events in Cambridge. The weekly bulletins will be published and stored here, as well as being sent out to our mailing list. We’ve also tried to provide other useful links and information, but the website is still in its early stages, so please email us with any suggestions.

This term we hope to have lots of events for you, including regular meetings and possibly film nights – so watch this space (or, altenatively, subscribe to it via RSS or join our mailing list). If you have any suggestions about future events, or would like to help out (we are particularly in need of good venues!), again, please email us.
